Research assessment and geographical journals: evaluation systems, publishing houses and open access

Organizer

Eugeo

Description

The panel aims at reflecting on the methods by which the output of scientific research is evaluated, in light of the introduction in many countries of national research evaluation systems that impact severely on the distribution of funding and on individual researchers. Given the variety of these systems and the harsh debates that those have caused in some cases, there is a pressing need to consider whether actually existing assessment methods are appropriate to evaluate the quality of research and the role of researchers. As none of those systems is purely objective or neutral, it is needed to understand their impact on the production of geographical knowledge, the diversity of Academic contexts to which they are applied and what role geographical societies can play in their improvement and adaptation to the specificities of human geography.
